Rainy Days Are Here Again!

by Sarah on June 28, 2007 at 06:49
We are finally getting some rain! The past 2 days we have had some big storms, and it looks like it could rain any minute today as well. Normally I wouldn't worry about such things, but our new lawn really needed some! Travis had been doing a good job of keeping it watered, but there's no substitute for Mother Nature. So, everything here is starting to green up from that nasty brown, burned grass look which is definitely a good thing. We did have a little scare Tuesday night however...not one, but 2 houses in our neighborhood were struck by lightning!! One of the houses is right across the street from us, and I think it came pretty dang close to hitting our house! I was looking in our living room from the kitchen when all of a sudden I saw a reeeeally bright light and the thunderclap came right after that. Then a few minutes later a fire truck came whizzing down the street (we are literally the only residents on the street, you can imagine my surprise!) and turned the corner to stop at the neighbor's home. I think we were very, very lucky to say the least! What would I have done at home alone with the baby and 4 pets if a fire had started in our home! Freaked out for sure!!

So besides the storms, we have had a good week so far. Travis's selling month ended Tuesday, and he absolutely shattered his previous best record for comissions! I am in the middle of a long work week, but after this weekend I will be off for over a week! We are definitely ready for our trip to Nana and Poppy's house for the holiday! We are leaving Tuesday afternoon, and we finally talked Jamie and the kids into going with us! So we will have 3 adults and 3 kids (and all of our luggage!) packed into our minivan! We always have a great time down there, and I am really excited to see Harry toddling around their house!

I'm not exactly sure what was going on with me this past weekend, but I was really out of it this past weekend! I booked a flight on Friday for me and Harry to go see Juliana in DC for the first few days of August while Travis is on his fishing trip using my credit card. I don't know if I made this memory up or not, but I think Harry picked it up off the couch and was walking around with it. Anyway, cut to Sunday, I was grocery shopping and when I went to pay, I noticed that particular credit card was gone from my wallet. We turned the house upside down looking for that stupid thing and could not find it. What kind of idiot lets her 14 month old steal her credit card (allegedly)?? That was the last transaction on the account, so I don't think any unsavory folks have my card. It is here somewhere....hopefully. Then on Saturday, we took our family picture and a poster to have it framed. It was rainy out, so I took the picture into the store in the envelope with all of the other pictures. Yep, I left the envelope in the store, didn't realize it until we were almost home, and it takes about a half hour to get there. Good times! Thankfully, the girl that was helping me saw them and put them back for me. I was on a roll! Things have been a little better this week!

Little Harry has been good, sort of! I know I have NO basis to complain about my kid, he is basically an angel, but he is starting to develop some sass! Last night he walked over to Oscar who was innocently laying on the couch and whacked him on the head. Travis took a hold of him and sternly said "Harry, no!" and he laughed! And promply did it again! I've seen him scream, stomp his feet, or slump to the ground when being told something that he doesn't like, but laugh? That was a new one for me! I guess the trick is not to laugh back, something that all of you that know me well is very difficult! He has also been displaying a new trick of taking a drink of milk and then letting it dribble out of his mouth. That one was funny the first few times, but I don't giggle at that one anymore. He sweet cuddly moments are quick to make up for the more undesireable actions for the time being!

5552

by Sarah on June 21, 2007 at 06:49

Look at me in my new stylin' shoes...my WIDE shoes that is!

I flipped open my cell phone on the way home from work this evening to make a call and when I opened up my contacts, a new one had mysteriously appeared...5552. I think I know who the culprit may be...my son Harry! He was playing with my phone on the way to Katrina's today and I heard it make a noise like it does when you save something. I didn't think much about it at the time, I was just hoping that he wasn't erasing things or causing other serious damage. But how cute is that? 5552, I think I'll keep it to remind me of my baby when I open up my phone!

Sorry (again!) for the long delay in posts! It's not that I don't have cool things to say about stuff that Harry is doing, but we have been into a little bit of this and that. The biggest thing we have done lately is travel to Travis's Summer Regional for work. It was only about an hour and a half away, but it was still kinda nice to get out of dodge for a few days. The company always does things right, free hotel, good food, excellent babysitting for some functions. I can't complain! Harry actually did really well sleeping this time too! I think it helped that we could put his crib around a corner in the room so that he couldn't see us. He was really well behaved the whole time, and he especially loved the openness of the hotel lobbies and hallways! He was running around like a madman the whole weekend! We also made a trip to the zoo and he actually was into seeing some of the animals! He actually cried when we left the monkey exibit--we suspected that it is because he really is part monkey himself!! The company also bought tickets for a minor league baseball game which was a lot of fun. It was actually a double header and the bus wasn't going to come back to pick us up until the 2nd game was over (gulp!), so I was a little worried about how that would work out, but he was a total angel. It also helped that the games were only 7 innings long. That was the second time he sat through a whole baseball game...maybe we have a little fan on our hands!!

On to Father's Day...Travis went to the F1 race with Poppy and Scottie, so Harry and I were on our own for the first half of the day! He was a piece of cake...we went to church (I had to wake him up at 10am!) and came home for lunch and he went down for his nap around 1. He didn't get up until after 4!! I think the weekend absolutely wore him out! We got Travis a gift certificate to the golf course close to our house for 4 golf lessons. He was so excited about it he called that day to set up his first lesson! I think Trav had a good day. It is hard to believe that we have both been through 2 Mother's/Father's Days! How time flies...

Our little reading machine...do you know how big Baby Elmo is? I do!

Harry has truly been so utterly adorable the past few weeks. Here are a few new things that he has been doing--he says "uh uh" as in "no" (while shaking his head no-no) and he means it! I thought it was just a fluke, but the spoonful of food that went flying across the room told me otherwise! He also points at things and says something like "Da?" when he wants them. I don't know if I have mentioned it or not, but he is constantly bringing us books to read and crawls in our laps. How do you say no to that? We have read about the adventures of Purdue Pete (thanks, Jen!) more times than I can fathom!! He also puts the phone (and other objects!) up to his ear and pretends to talk, but in true stubborn baby form, will not actually talk to people on the phone. The past few days he has constantly been saying "me, me, me, me" and I hope it's not the beginning of "Mine!". Along with all of this cuteness comes with the occasional temper tantrum, but nothing major yet. Just a bit of feet stomping and the occasional dramatic slump to the floor. Nothing I haven't been able to control yet. He is still too cute when he is mad!

I think it is safe to say that Harry is starting to teethe his bottom molars. He is constantly sticking his fingers in the back of his mouth and there have been times when he has cried unconsolably for no apparent reason other than I think he is hurting. Luckily (that rapping you here is me knocking on some wood) it has not disturbed his nighttime sleep, so I am thankful for that. He won't let me anywhere near his mouth, so I can't even see if they are starting to peek through or not. I hope it doesn't last long...I definitely don't like seeing my little guy in pain!!

Wide Feet Discrimination

I suppose I should preface this post with a background story. Over Memorial Day weekend, we went out to lunch with Nana and Poppy while they were here visiting. Harry seemed kind of tired since it was around lunch time, but I didn't think it would be a big deal because he was most likely hungry too. We were getting ready to leave the house, so I put on his tennis shoes. Usually no big deal, but this time it was pretty difficult. Looks like he's going to need some new shoes in the near future! Harry even whined a little, but I chalked it up to him not wanting to sit still long enough to get his shoes on. So we get to the restaurant, order our food, and get him settled in the highchair. He starts to cry. Wow, he must be really hungry! I find some snacks to give him and shared my iced sweet tea with him, which would normally appease him in just about any situation. This is just really not like him, I kept thinking...even if he was tired and hungry. So we all get our food, and Harry's attitude hasn't changed. Now I knew something else was going on, because as he was stuffing bites of PB&J in his mouth, he was still crying off and on!! It was a really nice day out, so I just took him outside so everyone else could enjoy their lunch. I carried him around outside and he cheered up a bit. I thought maybe he wanted to walk around a little bit, maybe that was the problem! I put him down on the ground, and he began to cry instantly! Duh. His feet hurt because I had jammed his little feet in them. I felt like such a loser mom. From that day on, I have been on the search for some new tennis shoes for the little guy. As with most things for baby boys, there just isn't that many cool things to choose from. I finally found some at a local department store and I was so eager to finally get Harry some cool sneaks! Except the not-so-friendly sales guy kept hounding me, telling me that none of the shoes would work. Why? Because he feet are "too tall on the top". What in the heck does that mean?? So, I left and went to a shoe store for kids, eager to prove Mr. Meanypants wrong! My kid has perfectly normal feet, right? Aren't most babies' feet a bit on the chubby side? I thought baby shoes would probably correct for that. So they measured his (perfect, in my opinion) feet, and one foot was a half size larger than the other, and oh yeah, his feet are wide. Huh. I thought wide would mean side to side, but maybe babies' wide is top to bottom?? Of course at this store, they had no really cool shoes. And every shoe I thought I could compromise on, they didn't have his size in stock. Poor kid. So I took down all of the info and we ordered the wide shoes (I also ordered him a pair of sandals in which he needed and EXTRA WIDE) on line. I wanted the shoes to be here by next week since we are going away for a few days, so I had to pay for the faster shipping which added on a nice little fee to the already overpriced shoe bill. Who knew Harry had such wide feet...and that it is an absolute pain in the bum?? Ah, I shouldn't be that way...he is perfect in every way that is important!

Have I mentioned that Harry LOVES his doggies? Almost every time we come home, as soon as we get him out of his carseat he starts saying "Doggy? Doggy?" When we get inside, he rushes to the room they are in, tries to help open the door, and helps us let them outside. He even remembers to shut the baby gate to the living room behind him! What a good kid! I'm still not willing to say that he is saying anymore words, but he did say "red" when looking at a book about colors at Noah and Andrew's house yesterday (thanks again for having us over!!). He is such a chatterbox at times...it is getting harder to tell if he is babbling new sounds or trying to say things!

Hugs

I just realized that I haven't posted in almost 2 weeks! I guess we have been busy with activities and work! I'll give a quick rundown of the last few weeks! I turned 28 (gulp!!) on the 22nd. It was a good day, very low key. We were in the midst of a very busy, crummy week at work, so we basically took it easy. Travis and Harry got me a car hookup for my new iPod, and it works so fabulously! We had a busy Memorial Day weekend too! Nana and Poppy were here for the race and they stayed at our house Friday night. We went out to one of our favorite Mexican places and they couldn't believe how well Harry ate! I don't know if I have mentioned it or not, but Harry LOVES Mexican food! We then went shopping on Saturday and to a cook out at Chris's Sat. night where we played Guitar Hero for the first time. I loved it! I can't wait to play again! Sunday after church, we went to Travis's Granny's and spent the night with everyone. We took the Pack 'n Play for Harry to sleep in. I was kind of apprehensive about it because I really didn't think that he would sleep well. He proved me wrong of course! He went right down to sleep and didn't wake up once until about 10am! Travis, Chris, and I took him to the Memorial Day parade, his 2nd one! We had fun and saw a lot of people we knew from back home.

This weekend has also flown by! We had a rough day yesterday...Harry didn't sleep well Friday night and I'm not sure if it is because he has a little cold or if it is because I think he is getting one if his bottom molars. Anyway, we had a drama filled morning complete with mini-tantrums and lots of whining! So I put him down for an early nap and he ended up sleeping for about 3 hours! We were hosting a couples baby shower for our friends Nate and Krista at Maggiano's last night and since Harry had such a bad day, I didn't think he would make it. Luckily, Mom and Dad agreed to come over to watch him while we went out to dinner with the gang. They watched him over at George and Audra's house so he also got to spend some time with Cousin Aiden! Apparently he had a great time and gave Aiden lots of hugs! Travis and I had sooo much fun going out with just our friends alone. As much as we love Harry and spending time with him, I have to admit it was great being able to eat my own dinner in peace! I even splurged and had 2 drinks! It was a great time!!

The Hugging Machine

Speaking of hugs, that is Harry's new favorite pastime! He will usually do it on command, or he often will do it on his own! The dogs are his most common targets, and they usually don't mind as long as he's not too rough. Needless to say, this is probably my most favorite new thing he has learned to do! Another cute story from this week...anyone who has spent any amount of time around my son knows he loves to play (and say!) peek-a-boo. For some reason he started to cover his ears and say peeka--bah! when he takes them off. So cute!
